The Compass Health Center Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides short-term stabilization for patients who are having difficulty managing their symptoms in traditional outpatient treatment. The IOP can be used as a bridging treatment between the Partial Hospital Programs (PHP) and traditional outpatient treatment, or as a step-up of care when traditional outpatient care does not suffice. Often patients who begin PHP will step down to the IOP (half-days) before being discharged from the Compass Health Center facilities. The average length of stay in the IOP treatment for depression is approximately 2-6 weeks, however, because each individual will have their own individualized treatment plan, the timing may vary.
Programs for Children (ages 9-12) and Adolescents (ages 12-18)
Through this program, the patient will continue to be involved in school and keep up with as much of their regular routine as possible, while also being provided a intensive support and treatment from Compass Health Center staff. The IOP will run during after school hours to ensure that the patient maintains stability throughout their daily routines.
Programs for Young Adults (ages 18-24) and Adults (ages 25 and up)
Individualized treatment plans are created to focus on stabilizing symptoms and establishing a foundation of skills essential to the long-term success of the individual. Every patient will participate in group and individual therapy, and the adults in the IOP are strongly encouraged to engage in additional family/couples therapy.
The highly-trained IOP treatment team at Compass Health Center will design individualized programs for patients with consideration to psychiatric diagnoses, developmental functioning, behavioral needs, family involvement, and community resources. The primary purpose of the IOP is to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for patients who are at risk and having difficulty managing life stressors.
Specialized treatment plans include individual and group therapy, peer support, psychiatric treatment, and family intervention. This comprehensive approach is designed to help the patient return to a more functional, healthy, and independent life.
Our goals include:
- Assessing risk and stabilization of crisis while reducing psychiatric symptoms
- Designing individualized treatment plans that are appropriate for the patient’s diagnosis, developmental functioning, behavioral needs, family involvement, and community resources
- Empowering the patient through individual, group, family, CBT, DBT, experiential therapies
- Helping patients learn concrete coping skills — distress tolerance, emotional management skills, relaxation techniques, and effective communication skills
From the beginning of treatment, family involvement is imperative and an integral component of the program. Research has shown that individuals whose families are involved in their therapeutic treatment have a better outcome and a higher success rate. A major goal through the IOP is to provide family members with information and support that will assist patients in their recovery.
Overall, the Compass Health Center staff will aim to decrease the amount of time a patient spends in the IOP program as their symptoms and level of functioning improves, and our clinicians help them transition back to the community and into the care of outside providers.
