Back / Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Northbrook Teen Intensive Outpatient CareThe Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides short-term stabilization and intensive treatment for children, adolescents, young adults, and adults who are having difficulty managing daily life stressors. The goal of this psychiatric program is to stabilize symptoms, including mood disorders, depression and/or anxiety, and help patients transition to a lower level of care. Individual treatment plans that address psychiatric symptoms and behavior are designed by our team in Chicago or Northbrook for each patient’s specific needs.

Compass Health Center’s multidisciplinary team uses evidence-based therapies that minimize the need for hospitalization, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and mindfulness. These treatment modalities empower our patients with new coping skills. Family involvement in family therapy is integral to the patient’s success in Chicago or Northbrook.

The hours of PHP are similar to a school day for children and adolescents (9 AM to 3 PM, Monday to Thursday. 9 AM-2:30 PM on Friday), For young adults and adults, the hours are 9:30AM-2PM. Therapies may include group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, behavioral therapy, and expressive art therapy. Children and adolescents receive academic support in addition to psychiatric care.

PHP for Children (ages 9 to 12)

The purpose of the Children’s PHP is to provide short-term stabilization in a safe, supportive environment for children aged 9 to 12 who are having difficulty managing daily life stressors. Symptoms may include sleeping all day, refusing to attend school, and refusing to eat. Individual treatment plans that address psychiatric symptoms and behavior are designed by Compass’ team for your child’s specific needs. We use evidence-based therapies and treatment plans that minimize the need for hospitalization.

The hours of PHP allow your child to maintain a normal, school-like schedule. Through a combination of group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, behavioral therapy, and expressive art therapy, your child will be empowered with new skills, such as distress tolerance, emotional regulation, mindfulness skills, social interaction, and effective communication.

Family involvement in weekly family therapy is required and is an integral component of the child’s treatment plan success. Our goal is to help patients transition from an intensive level of care and restore them to a level of functioning that allows them to return to their schools and ordinary activities.

The Children’s PHP also incorporates one and a half hours of supervised study each day under the guidance of an education specialist and teacher’s assistants. Patients in the Children’s PHP may be transitioned to the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as their symptoms resolve and coping behaviors improve.
