Ms. Abels’ expertise is working with children who have distinct academic, behavioral and emotional needs, as well as in developing positive connections with families and school support teams. Her teaching career began at Deerfield District 109 from 1996-1999 as a Special Education Resource Teacher for grades K-5. From 1999-2003, she taught second grade at South Park School in Deerfield. Prior to working at Compass, Ms. Abels worked as a private provider, supporting students from grades K-12 with academic planning, review for tests, and overall organizational skills. During that time, she worked closely with school teams to help facilitate communication between the school and home. Ms. Abels earned her M.Ed. in Special Education (Learning Disabilities, Behavior/Emotional Disorders) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1996.
